Thanks for visiting! My name is Stewart Wills, and I’m a four-decade-plus veteran of business and scientific communication, writing and journalism. While recently retired from full-time work, I’m still actively taking on freelance projects that can benefit from my combination of skills, subject-matter expertise and experience.

That expertise and experience includes:

  • Nearly 11 years as the editor of, and frequent contributor to, Optics & Photonics News, the high-quality monthly news and feature magazine published by Optica (formerly The Optical Society).
  • More than 13 years as the Web editor for the journal Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science..
  • Two decades of additional experience editing and writing in both freelance and staff positions, covering topics in business, finance and environment.
  • A Ph.D. in geology and geophysics from Columbia University’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory.

Across my career, I’ve researched and written news stories, features and other content on a broad span of topics, from laser science to quantum tech in Europe to optical-fiber-based earthquake sensing to the photonics workforce (additional samples here). I’ve also edited technical communications on a wide variety of subjects in the biological and physical sciences; produced podcasts on science and scholarly publishing; conducted interviews for Q&As; and edited, revised and shaped a range of scientist- and staff-written feature articles, columns and more. Drawing on that experience, I can add value to virtually any project in the science communication sphere.

This site includes additional details and samples of my work, as well as a few posts from a personal blog with ruminations around topics mostly tied to communications and technology. If my background looks like a good fit for an upcoming project or freelance assignment and you’d like to start a more concrete discussion about what I can offer, let’s talk.
